DEVELOPMENT OF OCEANOGRAPHIC RESEARCH IN GREECE

Cel

Greece is a typical marine country as it has more than 2000 islands and a huge coastline. This coastline, generates income from tourism, recreation, transport, fisheries, aquaculture and salt extraction but it is managed without any serious planning. Many human activities affect the water quality and threaten this fragile ecosystem. A lot of environmental problems have been observed mainly near cities and industries. It is now recognized that there is an urgent need for better marine environmental manag ement towards sustainability, under scientific guidance. Although the most of the above activities are directly related to the improvement of the environmental condition in the Greek seas, the pressure for better environmental quality is still low. The d evelopment of Oceanography in Greece although significant during the past thirty years, is not yet adequate, although there are a lot of scientists with postgraduate studies in marine sciences. The development of marine studies and research, however, can not be sustained and endured if it is not correlated with the prospective of the professional occupation of the scientists, in positions pertinent to their studies and specialisations. There are several Services in the Public sector that are involved i n marine matters but employ very few marine scientists. The private sector employs even less. The University of Athens together with the Hellenic Oceanographers Association and the European Federation of Marine Science and Technology Societies intend to o rganize in the frame of the 2005 'Researchers in Europe initiative' some events in order to promote the urgent need for the 'Development of Oceanographic research in Greece'. The events shall include workshops, presentations, field and laboratory work a nd visits to schools in coastal cities.
