Newgrowth in the EU chemicals and technology sector through industry led training in nano-materials, catalysis, chemical engineering and atomistic modelling

Cel

The aim of this Marie Curie Host Fellowship for Early Stage Training (EST) is to establish a single-host training hub in the area of nano-chemistry, materials synthesis, catalysis and modelling at Johnson Matthey (JM).

JM will benefit through development o f science know-how in core business areas and the fellows will gain unique skills, such as business awareness and IPR knowledge, which will be very attractive to both industrial and academic employers for their future career.

The scientific projects are in tended to deliver improvements to the selectivity and energy efficiency of chemical industry processes, facilitate European commercialisation of fuel-cell technology and integrate chemical engineering and atomistic modelling into the EU industrial skill base. This project will contribute to reversing the "brain-drain" of talented young scientists to the US, by initiating career oriented PhD programmes that emphasise links with industry.

The training programme takes account of the Eurodoc recommendations for supervision and training of EST researchers and offers a full and comprehensive training programme for young scientists: high quality scientific skills, training in communications skills, business awareness and knowledge application, IPR and knowledge security, structured complementary training, comprehensive assessment and feedback, and key personal skills development.

This broad based training goes beyond most university based PhD schemes and will enhance the fellows' employment prospects and contribute to retention of skilled scientists in the EU area.

The fellows will enjoy the full benefits of employment at JM and at the same time receive a unique programme of study, which will give them not only high quality scientific skills, but also a strong understanding of the industrial application of science and it's relevance to the wider European Community.
