Final Report Summary - THROUGH AMATEUR EYES (Through Amateur Eyes: Film and Photography in Nazi Germany)

Work carried out to achieve the project’s objectives
1. The primary work carried out to achieve the project’s objectives was completed in archives in Germany, the United States, Britain and France. In keeping with the objective to bring to the public attention a series of lesser known images, the following archives were consulted:
Imperial War Museum, London
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
Jüdisches Museum, Frankfurt
Bundesarchiv Wiesbaden
Hamburg Institute for Social Research
Musée de la Shoah, Paris
The copyright for 45 selected images from these archives are reproduced and discussed in detail in Through Amateur Eyes. This will ensure that this objective is met.
2. The secondary objectives, a. to examine the historical and artistic relations of image techniques and technologies developed during the Nazi period, and b. to consider the films’ and photographs’ engagement with conceptual concerns of amateur images were also realized in the contextualization and analysis phases of the project.
Research for these analytical stages was completed in the following libraries:

Library of the Ruhr University Bochum
Düsseldorf
Essen

Main Results
The Main results of the research period can be identified in the production of the manuscript of Through Amateur Eyes: Film and Photography in Nazi Germany by University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis.
