BIT is about to spread best practice techniques among SMEs when implementing all kinds of integrated IT systems. BIT covers all aspects of an SME's business process, from electronic commerce between trading partners to the integration of various aspects of the SME's manufacturing processes. The business objectives of BIT are to enhance the effects of the system applications on an SME's flexibility and competitiveness. This will be achieved thanks to improved integration of various types of systems. BIT works with all kinds of available IT systems, enabling SMEs to identify the IT proposal that best fits their needs with respect to safety, rapidity and cost. For those SMEs which implemented IT applications, BIT has contributed to an increased awareness of the importance of a well drawn- up definition of requirements and an implementation plan covering: system architecture and description, benchmarking, training plans, organizational changes, timescales for implementation, risk management and IT vendor schedules. BIT's approach is as follows: - In the first phase, BIT helps SMEs to identify the IT systems which provide the best solutions to the requirements identified, together with the resulting requirements for interaction. These recommendations may include areas such as the functionality of the systems and also support issues which may have an impact on the practical commercial take-up of such systems. - In the second phase, assistance is given to help ensure that the most effective system is selected and implemented in accordance with the principles of Best Practice. - Finally, BIT initiates specific training measures in the SMEs and disseminates best practice for training. These training measures include basic user training for first-time users within SMEs, through to awareness training of the commercial opportunities arising from the implementation of advanced IT systems at SME board level. With this approach, BIT is able to provide: - help to improve the procedure used to create the DOR (Definition Of Requirements) but also to improve its structure and content to ensure its effective use. - Comprehensive information on potential suppliers relevant to the textile industry and designed to meet the needs specified in the DOR. - The techniques to be used to ensure that the evaluation of the most appropriate system was an objective assessment of the merits of each potential solution compared with their needs as specified in the DOR. - Guidance on implementing systems. BIT monitors the problems encountered by the SMEs and responds by providing corrective measures designed to meet the individual difficulties of SMEs to implement problem solving methods. - Help to improve integration across the systems selected for implementation by the SMEs. In addition, BIT aims at achieving integration between departments within a company and inter-company integration.
