Measurement of CP violation in the B_s system at LHCb

Final Report Summary - ASYMMETRY (Measurement of CP violation in the B_s system at LHCb)

Todays world of elementary particles is described by the so-called standard model. Although this model withstands all tests since more than 40 years, physicists know that it cannot be complete. There are unanwsered questions like the matter antimatter asymmetry in the universe or the origin of dark matter. The aim of this proposal was to reveal signs of potential extension of the Standard Model via precision measurements in quantum loops in B and charm meson decay at the LHCb experiment.

We measured the particle anti-particle transitions and asymmetries in the mixing of in neutral B and charm mesons at the LHCb epxeriment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Early measurements indicated significant deviations in these observables. We significantly improved the precision of the measurements however no sign for new physics was detected. This allows us to significantly restrict the parameter range for potential new physics models and especially to increase the lower limit for masses of potential new, non Standard Model - like particles. Additionally we started precision measurements of electroweak penguin decays. A complex angular analysis revealed apparent discrepancies with Standard Model predictions. More data is need to further study this interessting tension.
