European distributed and interactive simulation over network

Exploitable results

EDISON (European Distributed Interactive Simulation Over Network) is a generic and integrated infrastructure for Distributed Interactive Simulation Facilities. It supports interaction and collaborative work between geographically distributed facilities for simulation modelling, processing and post-processing. EDISON supports pure numerical as well as real-time simulations, including Hardware-In-the-Loop and Man-In-the-Loop. EDISON allows the resolution of simulation problems that in the past could only be handled within long time frames or at the cost of expensive computing support facilities. Geographically Distributed and Interactive Simulation Facilities are a valuable tool in reducing the overall cost of simulation facilities (non-duplication of components, teams knowledge and skills), and allow the interactive use of remote simulation resources. As a result, work is more flexible and efficient, shortening the development cycle of new systems and anticipating the detection of design, integration or operational problems, as well as minimising the need for travel by experts. EDISON architecture and a commitment to distributed simulations reinforces the ability of European industry to co-operate with non-European organisations without having to displace large teams or to deliver a duplicate facility, thus preserving European intellectual property rights and know-how.
