Final Report Summary - SUNJET (SUstainable Network for Japan-Europe aerospace research and Technology cooperation)
Executive Summary:
SUNJET is a European Project within the Framework Programme 7 (Research / Aeronautics and Air Transport) aiming at establishing an initial framework, data base and network, in order to facilitate and enhance the cooperation in R&T activities between Japan and Europe. It introduces a more structured dialogue to identify the similarities in the respective research agendas and roadmaps.
As from the starting date of the project (1st of June 2011) the work has been concentrated on the following areas:
* To identify ad-hoc EU-Japan R&T cooperation areas of mutual benefit
* To propose win-win R&T roadmaps / cooperations
* Establish a mutual understanding of administrative mechanisms: clarify the principles governing such EU-Japan R&T cooperation, respective funding mechanisms, IPRs, …etc…and the main barriers to that cooperation and suggest ways to overcome all the problems.
Main Results
SUNJET project has identified the areas where the cooperation topics are mutually favoured assuring a good reciprocity between the parties.
It does not interfere with the various EU-Japan R&T cooperative activities already undertaken, but has nonetheless provided rules and reference that are beneficial to all.
Finally the project provides common R&T road maps for cooperation to be introduced in future calls for proposals within Framework programmes of the European Commission and mechanisms in Japan.
Project Context and Objectives:
SUNJET is a European Project within the Framework Programme 7 (Research / Aeronautics and Air Transport) aiming at establishing an initial framework, data base and network, in order to facilitate and enhance the cooperation in R&T activities between Japan and Europe. It will introduce a more structured dialogue to identify the similarities in the respective research agendas / road maps
The objectives of WP1 are to continue to ensure momentum and strategic guidance to the SUNJET project, obtaining the views from the Advisory Board, reflecting both EU and Japan recommendations:
• views from the pan European ACARE aeronautics public and private stakeholders,
• but also views from the Japanese community, represented in the Board via their high level permanent members.
The objectives of the WP2 are to obtain and synthesise the information and recommendations from the Focal Points of European manufacturing industry, Research Establishments and Labs, and the Universities. This information includes inputs on the existing EU-Japan R&T cooperation actions, the supply of EU–Japan network contributions, elements of EU-Japan roadmaps and recommendations for the methodology to implement R&T cooperation.
The objective of WP3 is also to ensure the project administration towards the consortium and the EC.
Project Results:
A substantial number of actions (meetings, conference, workshops) were carried out in order
to pave the way for a facilitated EU-Japan dialog.
An advisory Board has been set up.
The Member States undertook a review in order to get from a European point of view, a synthesized overview of the EU-Japan cooperation in R&T either at European Level or by each Member State. The report was delivered in the first reporting period but presented to the partners in the second reporting period.
In summary the report has shown a very good responsiveness attitude of the Members States and it can be used as a reference to find ideas and opportunities for the future.
The main contribution for the study has been the coordination and elaboration of a list of areas and themes of common interest. In order to do so, the following steps were taken:
Intensifying contacts with Japanese contact points for each of the areas of collaboration foreseen in SUNJET:
• Airframes
• Engines
• Systems and Equipment
• Research Establishment
• Academia
Presenting to the Japanese contact points the European areas of collaboration and vice versa within the context of SUNJET
As a significant result a Roadmap of potential joint research topics has been designed.
Based on the acquired knowledge results, the created consortium functioning dynamic, the existing contacts networking and the list of items of common interest, the SUNJET Consortium considers that it has fulfilled its obligations.
Potential Impact:
SUNJET has established a framework, data base and network that will facilitate the cooperation in R&T activities between Japan and Europe. Through the participation of all the relevant Stakeholders, it will introduce a more structured dialogue to identify the similarities in the respective research agendas / road maps and to set up some common collaborative research projects.
