Multipartite Entanglement in Quantum Optical Systems

Cel

As one of the most interesting part of quantum optics and quantum information, I chose to study multi-partite entanglement. While bipartite entanglement is well understood, multi-partite entanglement is still under intensive research. Beside the point of v iew of theory, this topic is also very important from the point of view of experiments since with the rapid development of quantum control it is now possible to study experimentally the entanglement of many qubits using photons, trapped ions, or cold atom s on an optical lattice. In detail, I propose to study the following timely topics:(i) During the mobility period, I have developed several methods for detecting entanglement in optical lattices of cold two-state atoms. I would like to discuss further my fi ndings with experimentalists and look for a possible experimental realization.(ii) I plan to continue my work on characterizing the entanglement arising in spin chains. In a recent work I proposed to use energy for detecting entanglement in systems in ther mal equilibrium. This approach is very useful also from the point of view of solid state physics, since it gives further insight on the thermal ground state of familiar spin models.(iii) I would like to do further research on entanglement witnesses, or ent anglement criteria, in general, independent from direct connections to experiments. (iv) Finally, I would like to determine in what sense genuine multi-party entangled states are different from many-qubit states with partial entanglement. Are there quantum information processing tasks which need exclusively genuine multi-party entanglement? The answers to these questions would help considerably understanding multi-partite entanglement and would also point to new applications.
