Final Activity Report Summary - MOLEPI (Restoration of molecular epidemiology research in highly polluted region of Upper Silesia, Poland)
The aim of the project was to restore molecular epidemiology research at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Branch in Gliwice, Poland, after Dr Grazyna Motykiewicz returned from United States (US) to Poland and her home institution. Since 1989, Dr Motykiewicz was involved in a joint molecular epidemiology research with scientists from different laboratories both from EU countries and US. During this time Dr Motykiewicz was periodically working outside of Poland as a fellow and eventually she held a permanent position at Columbia University. After coming back to Poland, Dr Motykiewicz decided to continue molecular epidemiology research at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center in Gliwice.
This project was planned to include:
(a) the follow-up studies based on retrospective data on volunteers previously taking part in the molecular epidemiology research performed in Gliwice between 1989 and 1995;
(b) the new case-control studies using samples collected from patients hospitalised and treated at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and cooperating hospitals;
(c) organisation of bio-bank for storing biological samples collected for future molecular epidemiology and other ex vivo research.
Ad.(a). The planned study had been performed and obtained data indicated causative relation between chemical exposure and cancer development. The results of the study were presented at the conference 'Frontiers in cancer prevention research', 12-15.11.2006 Boston, US.
Ad. (b). Laboratory of molecular epidemiology has been organised where new case-control studies were planned.
Ad. (c). The conceptual and organisational framework for the Silesian bio-bank had been created, including preparation of business plan and feasibility study for building up the facility.
Activities initiated during the MOLEPI project (molecular epidemiology studies and organization of Bio-bank) are continued in the host institution, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, after the project termination.
