FORUM FOR ALLERGY PREVENTION

Cel

The prevalence of asthma and allergies across Europe is very high. The associated societal burden of costs for the treatment and management of these conditions is enormous. Current therapies are effective in controlling symptoms in most patients, but no curative or preventive approach has been found. The overall aim of the FORALLVENT project is the creation of a platform and forum for the development of strategies enabling to close the gap between the science on allergic disease and the practical application of its results in prevention, clinical treatment and in the formulation of specialized foods. Future research in the most promising avenues for the development of innovative preventive strategies to combat the allergy epidemic of the 20th century shall be prepared. This aim will be achieved by first exploiting and synthesising knowledge from different disciplines involved in and from experience gained in various previous experimental and epidemiological studies conducted within the 5th and 6th framework programme and other research in Europe. The FORALLVENT project will then enable an interdisciplinary expert group to brainstorm on the most promising innovative strategies for the development of novel preventive and therapeutic approaches involving science and industry. A further element will be the maintenance of an existing birth cohort to prospectively evaluate the potential of allergy protective substances by testing generated hypotheses in vivo. An overall important component is the dissemination of findings to potential partners in industry, trade associations, interest groups, patient organisations, the general public and policy making bodies by means of target-oriented publications, fact sheets and a website. The FORALLVENT study will therefore also serve as preparation for the shaping and structuring of the 7th frame work programme of the European Commission.
