Safety Analysis Tools for Electrical Wired Interconnected Systems

Final Report Summary - EWIS SAT (Safety Analysis Tools for Electrical Wired Interconnected Systems)

Executive Summary:
KEONYS has developped a complete safty platform in compliance with CS25.1709 standard ; this platform enables, in a collaborative mode covered by People & Organization features, to perform automated safety studies. this will ease customers to prepare certifications and provide documents to Airworthiness Authorities.

Project Context and Objectives:
The objectives for the project were to:
• Demonstrate the feasibility to parse Neutral format containing EWIS design
• Define and implement the Safety database
• Convert the EWIS design into EWIS safety object by the addition of the safety information contained in the database
• Demonstrate the feasibility to perform FTA generation ( in Aralia and in neutral format )
• Demonstrate the feasibility to perform FMEA studies
• Demonstrate the feasibility to perform Zonal Safety Assessments
• Demonstrate the feasibility to perform Particular Risks Analysis
• Demonstrate the feasibility to perform Segregation Analysis
• Demonstrate the feasibility to perform Redundancies Analysis

Project Results:
The achievements for this project id the safety plateform, developed by KEONYS in the frame of the EWIS SAT Clean Sky project, which is named ISeenChecker, ans it is now able to :
• Read and get accurate information from Electrical design neutral format ( Physical Harness)
• Provide complete tools to define safety components in the EWIS Safety database
• Build the resulting EWIS Safety Object and store it as a neutral format (XML)
• Perform on this safety object, instead of re-parsing every times the Physical Harness:
• FTA Analysis, export it in Aralia Format
• Display Fault Trees in a dedicated Viewer having all interactive commands
• FMEA Analysis and export results in Neutral CSV format
• Zonal Safety Analysis and export results in Neutral CSV format
• Provide historization as well as tools for search and view former simulation
• Perform Electrical Routes Segregation verifications (new feature)
• Perform Harness Redundancies verifications (new feature)
• Perform Zonal Redundancies verifications (new feature)
FTA, FMEA and ZSA analysis and outputs have been explained in previous period report. Please refer for more information. During second period, efforts have been made on People and Organisation management, and on Particular Risks Analysis.

Potential Impact:
In safety analyses that address EWIS failures directly, random EWIS failures are treated as basic events that enter into the bottom of system fault trees.
Moreover, today’s jet aircraft relies more on sophisticated electrical systems and computers, in which the reliability of wiring, power feeder cables, connectors, and circuit protection devices is crucial. Wiring is now seen as vital to systems that support an aircraft-level function, and wiring must be designed, modified, monitored, and maintained as such. As the CS25 section 1709 recommends, the EWIS must be considered as an important separate system, as important as hydraulic, pneumatic, structural, and other systems.

This project allows EWIS Supplier to improve system modelling, dysfunctional simulation and risk analysis capabilities by coupling EWIS database (that contains EWIS electrical and physical data usable such as geometry and length of each cable, bundles, zones, wire routing with space reservation, wire harnesses features) to our safety analysis tools.
Risk analysis can be quantified by taking into account the new EWIS component failures (e.g. bundle failure due to arcing wire or environmental conditions).

So at the end of the project, a tool is available which allows designer to perform Safety Analysis automatically based on Safety Database and a direct extract of 3D definition of a Bundle.
Here, we are discussing to make of ten thousand analyses in automatic mode and with business relevant criteria to select the critical cases for a Safety point of view. The Designer are able to run aeronautical analysis like FTA Analysis, FMEA Analysis, Zonal Safety Analysis and other.
The software developed during the project allows also to collaborate around this analysis, the Safety database is managed by expert, and designers can share analysis and result by program/msn…
So where analysis was done randomly, the project gets a huge impact on Safety by running analysis and hare around then in a secured environment. Now, we are able to make an automatic Safety analysis in EWIS and so increase the safety of the aircraft.

During, the project, we demonstrated the tools during the Paris Air Show on our 2 Stand: in Areospace Valley booth and NAG booth too. 2 conferences were made on this topic during the PARIS AIR SHOW and we made 2 articles into CAD MAGAZINE, 1 in May 2015 and one in July/August 2015.

Through this communication, the Railway industry and the Energy industry have contacted us to have further discussions around the development capabilities.
