Aim of this project is to develop an information and education structure in order to enhance wide scale application of RES technologies in communities at international, national, regional and local level, through active participation of professionals, as well as non-professional society members. The structure concerns technological and non-technological issues in the fields included in the Campaign for Take-Off, mainly concerning applications in the building sector(PV, solar thermal, passive and active solar systems, biomass, bioclimatic design and integration of RES in Communities aiming at 100% RES supply), and in the agricultural sector (biomass combustion & biofuels, solar thermal & electrical, wind and hybrid systems).
The project is structured in a two-fold manner:
A. RES in Communities is being promoted through the training of professional and non-professional women, who will then act as dissemination vehicles to their professional and social environment.
In particular:
Women architects and engineers in Greece and Spain are being trained in RES technologies and applications and thus will acquire additional skills, increasing employment and job creation prospects and equal opportunities. Two seminars, with duration of 300 hours each, are currently taking place in Athens and in Barcelona. The seminar for women engineers in Greece is carried out by EDEM, the Greek Women's engineering association, with the scientific support from CRES, the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources. In Spain, the Catalan Institute of Technology is conducting the project with the scientific support from the Polytechnical University of Catalonia. Through the professional associations of women engineers, knowledge and experience obtained will be disseminated to the majority of engineers (women and men) as well as to industrial and commercial networks.
Women of a general background in 6 regions of Greece and in Spain are being informed in issues concerning RES applications and their role at local, community, regional and national level. One-day seminars have already taken place in 4 cities in Greece, where about 400 women in total attended. Three more are scheduled, 2 in Greece and 1 in Catalonia. The seminars are conducted in Greece by the local chapters of the Women's Union of Greece (EGE) and in Spain by ICT. The training of women acts as a pilot application in this project. The women of various backgrounds will act as a social catalyst directing local society to the awareness and finally the demand of a more sustainable energy supply.
Energy experts in the field have been providing all relevant technical (as well as non-technical) information.
B. RES applications/technologies in Agriculture will be promoted by the training of young engineers, working in rural and agricultural areas.
The following aspects characterise the training of engineers in clean energy and agriculture:
Young rural engineers will be trained in such a way to be able to understand and apply the technologies and to follow-up the applications promoted by the "campaign of take-off" and to ensure a faster and successful implementation of R.E.T in the agricultural sector. The training consists of a twenty-day summer course in Greece, organised by the Laboratory of Agricultural Constructions & Environmental Control of the School of Agriculture Crop and Animal Production of the University of Thessaly, and will take place in Volos, during the summer of 2002. The training procedure will also include individualised, web-based long distance training. Additionally, one or two-day seminars will take place in Germany (where exactly?)[ET1], organised by the firm WIP Energy + Environment, in collaboration with the Bayerische Landesanstalt fur Landtechnik, Technical University of Munich (TUM).
The Universities and companies participating in the project, including, additionally to the above, the firm PHOTOVOLTAIC from Greece, have prepared and organised the material for the project oriented summer course, with the intention to replicate it in a regular basis.
Inter-faculty collaboration programs and private sponsoring or fees are potential financial solutions that will be examined for the implementation of the course in several European educational Institutions after the end of the project.
In the course of the project, printed and electronic material is being produced for training and dissemination purposes. The project will last for 18 months, during which the effectiveness of the training and the dissemination campaigns will be monitored and evaluated.
It is expected that by the end of the project technical and non-technical issues of Renewable Energy Sources application will have been communicated to a wide number of professionals, and to non-professional individuals (the general public), as well as to local authorities. The dissemination will lead to raising awareness to the advantages of Renewable Energy Technologies and to sustainable energy demand, aiding to the elimination of existing barriers.
