Synthesis of new materials based on half metallic ferromagnet CrO2 and optimisation of its properties for spin-electronics

Cel

The search for new materials as an alternative to Si-based technology has been at the forefront of research in contemporary solid-state physics and chemistry. One interesting route of overcoming the restrictions of conventional electronics is to make use o f the spin to transfer information.

A perquisite for this is the use of materials with full spin polarization of the conduction electrons such as the half metallic room temperature ferromagnet CrO2. We propose an investigation of high purity samples of CrO 2, which have been recently synthesized using a novel route.

These samples with a hitherto unexplored crystallographic and magnetic microstructure exhibit a host of interesting properties, together with the first observation of finite room temperature magnetoresistance (MR). We have also prepared some new CrO2 based composites, which exhibit significant enhancement in MR and thus can be used as potential candidates for spintronic devices.

Since this technique opens a new way to tailor MR by introducing new types of grain boundaries in any desired mass fraction, this provides a way to optimize parameters for spintronic properties of CrO2 based materials. We intend to study the effect of variation of the grain size and grain boundary density, in particular the r ole of antiferromagnetic nature of the grain boundary in magnetotransport.

Besides magnetic and transport measurements in ultra high fields up to 60 Tesla, we propose to use a variety of complementary techniques such as specific heat in magnetic field, Hal l effect, thermopower and electron spin resonance.

Better understanding of the underlying physics from the analysis of data obtained from these experiments will enable us to optimize parameters for a practical room temperature spintronic device based on Cr O2.

Finally, fabrication of thin films and magnetic tunnel junctions using granular CrO2 in an appropriate microstructure based on the knowledge gained from studies on bulk CrO2 is envisaged.
