Grammatical inference with correction queries

Cel

In the field of Grammatical Inference (GI), our research project aims to bring several formal results that can be relevant to understanding learning mechanisms in general, and particularly useful to study the processes of language acquisition. In this project, we will explore the relevance of correction queries (CQ) within the GI framework.

Our final goals are:
1. To develop a learning paradigm based on CQ
2. To apply CQ to classes of languages that are relevant from a linguistic point of view
3. To apply our results to natural language processing, multilingual problems, etc.

Following the project goals we believe that we open new perspectives: to bring the theory of GI and the studies of language acquisition together; to go deeper in the understanding of language acquisition. In contrast with the current research in GI that has focused mainly on the mathematical aspects of the models, our proposal has an innovative and interdisciplinary line of work, and we think that our project can produce relevant and interesting results not only in GI, but also in key areas like robotics, machine translation, etc.

This proposal constitutes a continuation of the research started in our PhD dissertation. We introduced a new learning paradigm, learning from CQ, based on the query-learning model proposed by D. Angluin in 1987. D. Angluin is one of the founders of the GI field. Taking into account that the key idea of our project (CQ) is based on the learning model that she proposed, working with her and her research group could be a positive experience.

Their high reputation in this field and the innovative aspects of our idea constitute good premises of high quality training and for the achievement of the goals of our proposal. Our stay will be beneficial also for other European partner institutions Spain, France, Germany, Romania, Hungary, etc. We hope that the results of our project will generate synergies and structuring effects at a European level.
