The Institute for the Study of Labour plans to organize in 2004-2007 a series of Summer Schools in Labour Economics, structured along the following lines and major aims: ? To provide world class advanced training for researchers in the early stage of their careers: The events will bring together world-class scientists conducting innovative work in their fields, to lecture and interact with about 36 students engaged in the preparation of their PhDs. The criteria for selection of students guarantee their pote ntial for excellence and aptitude to carry out research. The composition of the participants will be balanced in terms of gender and cover a wide spectrum of European countries. ? To develop research competencies and complementary skills of the participant s: The participants will benefit from lectures by leading scientists and will develop their skills for communication and knowledge-sharing by presenting their own work. Both training aspects are major assets for their future careers. ? To plant the seed fo r the creation of research networks that can contribute to enhance European competitiveness: The contact building and team spirit that is developed by intense work and social interaction during one week of Summer School will prove fruitful in creating new international research networks. ? To focus on issues relevant from a policy point of view, combining strong European contents and innovative scientific approaches: These conditions provide coherence to the scientific programme of the Summer Schools. Each event will achieve a balance between theories and empirical strategies.
