The development of an intelligent, self physical condition monitoring, illuminated, telephone casing for use in hazardous, arduous or safety critical environments

Cel

The issue of road and tunnel safety is of major importance throughout the EU. In 2002, 29,649 peopledied in transport accidents across the EU and 1,270,703 were injured, many of them seriously. The social and economic impact of these figures is considerabl e. A major safety problem is that of emergency phone installation, particularly in enclosed environments, such as road tunnels. This proposal aims to develop the SafePhone system with an "intelligent enclosure". This will be powered by a piezoelectric devic e which simultaneously monitors the condition of the enclosure and illuminates it via a network of fibre optics. The enclosure will therefore be capable of alerting a remote central control point of any impact damage and guiding stranded motorists to it in low light conditions. The SafePhone product will also offer considerably safer working conditions for the maintenance staff on the EU's major autoroutes and motorways by focusing maintenance effort only on those phones which have alerted the central contro l function as being in need of repair, thus also reducing maintenance effort and costs, and reducing the exposure of maintenance staff to danger from traffic. The product addresses latest EU directives on transport safety and, in particular integrates well with the Safe Tunnel Project. The product will also comply with EU directives on waste management and health and safety at work directives. The Consortium of SME's which is proposing this project for EU funding assistance all have considerable experience in the appropriate areas of component manufacture, installation expertise and system integration supported by the brand equity and marketing muscle of a L.E. end-user customer to make this project capable of implementation. In addition to the prime sector of transportation, there are other markets available to the SafePhoneproduct such as Petrochemicals, Construction, Food Processing and Offshore.
