Training in plant systems biology

Cel

The Department of Plant Systems Biology (PSB) of the Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB)-Ghent University strives to become a centre of excellence in Systems Biology. The Department is extremely well positioned to take a leading role i n this innovative approach, and the education and training of the next generation of top scientists in Systems Biology is one of its main missions.

Systems biology requires the integration of three disciplines:
I) bioinformatics and computational biology to model networks;
II) functional genomics to develop and implement tools for the high-throughput analysis of biological systems; and
III) last but not least biologists to ask the pertinent questions and to develop the right material to answer them.

Our Department will provide training in all three disciplines aiming at the acquisition of specific scientific and technological competencies in research as well as complementary skills in management, communication, and knowledge on ethical and IP issues. The broad scientific competence of the department of PSB will create the flexibility required to train all fellows in compliance with their current and future needs laid down in their Personal Career Development plan.

The provided training is expected to have a strong structuring effect on the European research system by enhancing the researcher's career prospects. It will position the early-stage researcher at the forefront of a novel scientific field that is rapidly gaining interest in the scientific community worldwide. Thus it will enhance the competitiveness of the European Research Community and enrich Europe's research capabilities. The experience of working in the environment of a research institute like VIB, with its mission to stimulate the translation of scientific knowledge into novel industrial activities based on advanced technologies, will help create a new generation of scientists aware of opportunities for industrial collaborations.
