Multi-disciplinary studies of human schistosomiasis in Uganda, Kenya and Mali: new perspectives on morbidity, immunity, treatment and control

Cel

The overall objective of the proposed work is to contribute to an increased knowledge about the effect ofpraziquantel on schistosomiasis related morbidity, the mechanisms behind this effect both regarding theregulation of host immune responses as well as t he effect on the parasite with the overall aim of improving thestrategies for morbidity control and it thus address the strategic objective relating to "New knowledge on biology, epidemiology and technologies relevant for sustainable surveillance systems of diseases on a regional scale; oninnovation in and improvement of existing interventions and help to implement appropriate strategies andpolicies for prevention, control and treatment" of vector-borne diseases such as schistosomiasis".In order to reach the overall objective of improving strategies for control we are aiming at the following researchrelated outcomes: 1) Increased knowledge about the dynamics of morbidity and how it may be affected andmodulated by treatment and 2) increased knowledge about the effect of PZQ on the host immune responses and3) non-invasive and reliable ways of detecting morbidity.Field studies with pre- and post treatment assessment of infection and morbidity status will take place in Uganda,Kenya and Mali and address both Schist osoma mansoni and S. haematobium infections.
