Systems Medical Diagnostics by In-vivo Ambient Mass Spectrometric Profiling of Tissue Lipidome

Final Report Summary - MASSLIP (Systems Medical Diagnostics by In-vivo Ambient Mass Spectrometric Profiling of Tissue Lipidome)

The Masslip project focused on the development of medical instruments which provide practitioners with real-time diagnostic information. The novel technologies developed allow the direct, minimally invasive chemical analysis of mucous membranes in the human body, allowing the early stage detection of a broad range of diseases from bacterial infections through chronic inflammations to cancer or pre-cancerous lesions. The new medical technology platforms developed throughout the project enable real-time clinical decision making, which is the most critical step towards merging diagnostics and therapy into a single step and ideally into a single medical appointment.
Besides the development of diagnostic instruments and methods, the research project is also creating a unique molecular inventory of healthy and diseased human tissues as well as the microorganisms colonizing them. This database is made available for the entire academic and industrial research community and will serve as an important source of information for the development of new therapies including novel antibiotics and anti-cancer treatments.
