Single droplet experiments and numerical modelling

Report with the results of single droplet experiments and numerical modeling Measurement campaigns of the combustion behavior of crude FPBOs and conditioned FPBOs will be performed. The experimental apparatus will be the same as that used in D4.2. The experimental thermo-optical analysis will permit defining the main combustion parameters like evaporation rate, burning rate, swelling coefficient, etc. Regulated and unregulated emissions of each fuel will be sampled and analyzed. Permanent gases and condensable species will be analyzed by means HPLC and GC-MS. Soot particles and cenospheres will be analyzed by means electron and optical microscopy.

Combustion tests on surrogate and its components

Report on the combustion tests on the surrogate and its components; They will be carried out tests on the combustion of fuel droplets of FPBO and the surrogate defined by PTM in single droplet experiments. The fundamental combustion properties of FPBO and the surrogate will be analyzed and compared. A second surrogate will be tested if the matching with the combustion characteristics of the FPBO will be not satisfying. The experimentation will be completed by combustion tests on the single pure compounds forming the ultimate surrogate. The experimental apparatus consists in a combustion chamber, where single fuel droplets are suspended to a bare thermocouple junction to measure the droplet temperature, and a high speed imaging shadowgraphy to follow the phenomenology exhibited by the droplets as well as the variation of their size.

Ash recycling options in focus regions

Ash recycling options in focus regions Based on the tests performed in T6.3 it will be determined what possibilities exist to recycle the ash in focus regions. In case of suitability for agricultural, horticultural or silvicultural use, greenhouse experiments will be designed to (i) assess the effect on soil (micro)biological properties, (ii) toxicity tests, and (iii) plant growth tests. It will further be evaluated how the ashes could best be combined with other by-products, e.g. for optimization of nutrient composition. Related to T6.3

Legal and pre-normative issues

Legal and pre-normative issues The following topics will be included: - Ensuring that the FPBO heating systems meet the requirements of the Ecodesign Directive and in particular the EC regulation No 813/2013 regarding to ecodesign requirements for space heaters and combination heaters; - Building regulations and permits needed to introduce FPBO boilers at residential level. This report results in guidelines on relevant regulations related to the market introduction of FPBO in residential applications. In case of risks and bottlenecks in legislation, possible solutions will be formulated that can serve as a basis for discussion with the relevant authorities, or to start the development of relevant standards, where appropriate. Related to T6.6 and Co-operation with WP3 (Task 3.5) will be done.

Kinetic reaction model for FPBO surrogate

Report with the kinetic reaction model for the FPBO surrogate This deliverable contains the details on the developement of a kinetic mechanism, able to describe the pyrolysis and combustion of the individual components of the surrogate FPBO fuel, and the validation of the mechanism through the comparison with available experimental data. The kinetic mechanism is made of a series of text files, which contain all the reactions and their rate parameters, as well as transport and thermo data of all the species.

Environmental health and safety aspects – A draft Safety Data Sheet for the most applicable FPBO will be prepared. Instructions for handling, use, storage, and transportation of conditioned FPBOs will be prepared. Related to T3.4

Spray characterization

Report on spray characterization Optical/laser techniques for the characterization of FPBO sprays will be developed and applied in the 20 kWth lab scale test rig developed at OWI (Task 5.2). Different optical configurations will be analyzed, depending on the design of the test rig at OWI, the kind of atomizer and the related main spray characteristics (spray angle, penetration, etc.) and properties of fuel. Two complementary optical methodologies for the characterization of the spray at OWI will be designed, set up and tested on calibrated sprays at IM laboratory. Related to T4.4

Thermo-physical characterization of FPBO and preliminary surrogate definition

Report with the thermo-physical characterization of FPBO and preliminary surrogate definition; This deliverable contains the analysis of the physico-chemical characterization of the FPBO oil which is used to obtain the first definition of the surrogate mixture, made using a few reference components. The chemical structure and mass fraction of each individual component of the surrogate fuel will be specified in this deliverable.

Report on compatibility of burner components with conditioned FPBO All fuel leading parts of the burner have to be compatible with FPBO, especially regarding choice of materials due to chemical properties of FPBO (corrosion). This report sums up the outcome of extensive test conducted at OWI and gives feedback to VTT and BTG in order to improve FPBO quality Related to T5.1

Report on blending rules of FP of biomass blends- Description of actual FPBO quality to be expected as a function of the blending ratio (binary blends).

Ash Composition

Ash Composition Tests will be performed to determine the expected ash composition. Basis will be the contents of nutrients and toxic compounds like heavy metals and xenobiotics, including their bioavailability. Related to T6.3

FBPO experiments and numerical modelling

Report with the results FPBO experiments and numerical modeling This deliverable contains the comparison between the FPBO single droplet experiments and the corresponding numerical modeling made using a 1D code and adopting the surrogate composition and kinetic mechanism developed during the activity. The report will also contain the comparisons made using the skeletal kinetic mechanism.

In principle the communication activities will focus on different audiences among them Scientific, Broader public, Students, Technology specialist (Heating system installers, boiler manufacturers, etc.), Multipliers like associations and committees, Policy makers and End-users. Different communication channels are used to communicate with the above mentioned target audience to present the progress and outcomes of the project. The commucation plan will describe the implementation targets for forthcoming period and will look back on the achievements.

DHO in 5 key countries

DHO in 5 key countries For each country, prices for heating oil may vary. This may be because of local market circumstances, quality of the heating oil (extra light oil in for instance Germany, low sulfur) and taxes other than VAT. For at least 5 key countries (Germany, Austria, France, Great Britain and Italy) the historic prices as they have to be paid by the consumers will be determined. Also, a future outlook of the heating prices will be made including possible or planned tax measures by governments, covering not only DHO but also pellet and gas prices. Related to T7.1.2
