Large-area laser-fabricated biomimetic structures

This deliverable involves the identification of the optimum processing parameters for the fabrication of moderatesize 1 cm2 flat areas mimicking lizard and buglike surface structures The starting point will be the parameters identified in D44 Optimum parameters will be identified by means of a systematic study on different inorganic materials employing highrepetition rate pico and femtosecond lasers and beam scanning The parameter space explored will include substrate material laser wavelength pulse duration repetition rate polarization pulse energy spot size scan velocity line separation and number of scans Optimized structures will be fabricated and their functional performance in terms of fluid transport tested

Publication of results on lizard skin

Delivery D2.1 publically reports on Task 2.1 (Characterization lizard skin) in the form of an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal about the findings on the function of micro-structures on the lizard integument for water transport using the Open Access model after end of Task 2.1.

Data Management Plan (DMP) - interim report

In the framework of the Open Research Data pilot the consortium will prepare a DMP in month 6.

Publication of results on laser-induced surface structures on inorganic materials

Delivery D3.3 publically presents project results of Task 3.1 (Laser-based mimicking of lizard structures) at the traditional laser-matter interaction symposium at the spring meeting 2016 of the European Materials Research Society (May 2nd - 6th 2016 in Lille France), associated with an article submitted to the symposium proceedings (peer-reviewed). [The paper submission deadline for the symposium proceedings is expected to be in May/June 2016.] The current state of the results of Task 3.1 and the corresponding paper/draft will be presented during the first action check meeting in m12. Delivery D3.3 complements delivery D3.2.

Large-area laser-fabricated self-organized structures

This deliverable involves the identification of the optimum processing parameters for the fabrication of moderate-size (1 cm2), flat areas featuring nanostructured surfaces obtained by laser-induced self-organization processes. In particular, the main effort will be directed towards fabrication of surface structures consisting of parallel grooves and cone structures with controllable spacing and orientation. Optimum parameters will be identified by means of a systematic study on different inorganic materials, employing high-repetition rate pico- and femtosecond lasers and beam scanning. The parameter space explored will include substrate material, laser wavelength, pulse duration, repetition rate, polarization, pulse energy, spot size, scan velocity, line separation, and number of scans. The quality of the fabricated nanostructures in terms of arrangement, size, periodicity, lateral extension will be assessed by optical microscopy, scanning electron and atomic force microscopy.

Publication of results on bug cuticles

Delivery D24 publically reports on results of Task 22 characterisation bug cuticle and Task 23 Polymer replica of bug cuticle in form of an article in a peerreviewed scientific journal about the findings on the function of micro and nanostructures of the bark bug cuticle for water transport using the Open Access model Deliverable D24 is based on deliverable D23 and partially on D22

Publication of results on hydrodynamic modelling

Delivery D26 publically reports on results of Task 25 Theoretical modelling in form of an Article in a highranked peerreviewed scientific journal about the results of theoretical modelling of the fluid transport on the nanostructures in animal integuments by the methods of hydrodynamics using the Open Access model after end of Task 25 Deliverable D26 is linked to deliverable D24

Laser-fabricated biomimetic structures up-scaled to manufacturing size and shape

This deliverable involves the identification of the optimum processing parameters for the fabrication of largesize 10 cm2 nonflat areas mimicking lizard and buglike surface structures on selected inorganic materials employing highrepetition rate pico and femtosecond lasers and beam scanning The parameter space explored will include the parameters listed in D42 and additionally include input beam diameter beam shape focal length of scanning lens and dynamic beam expander settings Optimized structures will be fabricated and their functional performance in terms of fluid transport tested

SEM images of nanostructures on web site

A comparison study will be performed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on micro- and nanostructures found on bug cuticles and similar features on polymer replicas of the bug cuticle. A summary of these findings will be published together with typical SEM images on the Website on the public section of the LiNaBioFluid web site. Delivery D2.2 presents first results from Task 2.2 (Characterization bug cuticle) and Task 2.3 (Polymer replica of bug cuticle).

Public summary of biological fluid transport mechanisms on web site

In milestone M2 (month 12), the status of understanding of the biological mechanism for the fluid transport out of the bug capillaries onto the plates of the cuticle will be reported. A summary of these findings will be published on the public section of the LiNaBioFluid web site. Deliverable D2.3 is partially based on deliverable D2.2.

Images of first results of lizard-like surface morphologies

Delivery D3.2 publically reports on Task 3.1, which involves systematic laser irradiation experiments on flat samples made of inorganic materials along with the identification of the optimum processing parameters for laser-based mimicking of lizard-like surface structures. As a result, in Delivery D3.2 a comparison of SEM images of micro- and nanostructures found on lizard skin and of similar laser-structures generated on hard inorganic materials will be published on the LiNaBioFluid Website. Delivery D3.2 complements delivery D3.3.

“LiNaBioFluid” web site

To disseminate relevant up-to-date information regarding the project, a web site will be set up. This will be the main entry point to the project’s general information. The web site will be updated regulary. Part of it will be secure, so that all partners have access to relevant documents, contact data and other material developed through the project.

Public summary of laser processing of bug-like surface structures with fast fluid transport

In milestone M5 m24 the status of understanding of the laserbased mimicking of buglike structures on inorganic materials surfaces providing a fast fluid transport will be reported This includes an upscaling and largearea manufacturing of the different characteristic surface structures identified in Tasks 31 32 and performing fluid transport tests Task 33 for identifying the wettingspreading behavior of the laser processed surfaces Associated with that milestone M5 in delivery D35 a public summary of these findings will be published on the LiNaBioFluid Website Delivery D35 complements delivery D34

Demonstrator for a low-friction slide bearing

This deliverable involves the design fabrication and testing of a slide bearing or pump part with laserstructured surface on inorganic material with bark buglike design featuring fast transport of lubricating fluids which results in a friction coefficient reduced by more than 90 compared to that of a plain surface of the same material The design will be defined according to the best results of D44 D42 and fabrication will be performed with using the highrepetition rate ultrashort laser system on the most suited material identified in D44 and D42 The functional performance of the demonstrator in terms of fluid transport will be tested and compared to stateoftheart technology
