Industrial implementation of adaptive computational methods for turbulent flow and fluid-structure interaction

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ADAPTIVE (Industrial implementation of adaptive computational methods for turbulent flow and fluid-structure interaction)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2015-04-01 do 2016-09-30

The ERC StG project GA 202984 UNICON was completed in 2013. The goal of UNICON was to develop new adaptive finite element methods for computer simulation of turbulent flow, for which the UNICON project made significant progress beyond the state of the art. The scientific results of the UNICON project include a new theoretical and methodological framework, and a computer implementation of the methods targeting the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, published as open source software. Compared to competing simulation software, free as well as commercial, UNICON computational technology was proven to exhibit unique features with respect to accuracy and efficiency. In this ERC PoC project ADAPTIVE the potential for commercialisation of the UNICON computational technology is investigated through the formulation and conduction of pilot projects, together with two large companies in the energy and automotive industries. The research team worked in close collaboration with engineers from both companies, and key advantages of the new technology were identified compared to standard simulation tools. Based on the feedback received during the pilot projects, and based on input from interviews with other potential pilot clients, a business model was derived.
