Feasibility study of a new tool for managing, processing, sharing and transferring huge amounts of scientific data (DataNimbus)

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - DataNimbus (Feasibility study of a new tool for managing, processing, sharing and transferring huge amounts of scientific data (DataNimbus))

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2015-09-01 do 2016-02-29

We are currently living in the Big Data era in which different technologies produce thousands of terabytes of data every minute. As data is generated so fast, we need to be able to transfer, process and analyse it, so we can understand it as fast as it is generated.
Mind the Byte (MTB) will develop DataNimbus, a commercial solution to transfer, store, share and analyse omics data through new algorithms and a set of tools focused on omics techniques for personalized medicine. But that may also be applied in any other area with Big Data scale of information. DataNimbus aims to bring closer usually expensive and unaffordable data movement and processing technologies to European SMEs and research facilities.
Taking into account all the collected information from potential future users, MTB has decided to focus, as first step, only in genomics data, but not limited to other kind of data (transcriptomics or proteomics, or even metabolomics) in future.
Along the past six months MTB has conducted a state-of-the-art research about the market, technical needs and legal feasibility of DataNimbus. It is totally feasible from economic, legal and technical point of view, as long as all actions, legalizations, records and reviews recommended in the technical report are conducted. Moreover, strategic partnerships are needed in its development stage.
Few representatives of some of interesting profiles of potential customers from different countries have been addressed and some interesting results can be extracted: Almost 64% of respondents would be interested in participating as a pilot institution/company in a potential development of DataNimbus, but they would like to have something real to test before.
Nowadays, every of the evaluated marketed bioinformatics solutions are just solving one or two of the steps of the value chain, but not covering all the identified needs. Although partial competitors have been identified, we could conclude that no direct competitor are still in the market, being DataNimbus the first in class.
This solution will be cloud based, offered on a pay-per-use basis. Cloud computing usage implies some economic and environmental advantages, and also provides some other strong benefits like resiliency and redundancy, goes faster on the projects deployment, scales as needed and lowers maintenance costs.
