Cel IT IS KNOWN THAT THE CORNER SHAPE IN THE MOULD CAN SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE CRACKING IN CONTINUOUSLY CAST BLOOMS AND SLABS. HOWEVER, THESE EFFECTS HAVE NOT BEEN QUANTIFIED IN TERMS OF SPECIFIC CORNER GEOMETRIES AND THE DEGREE OF THESE DEFECTS IN THE AS-CAST PRODUCT. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH THEREFORE IS TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER THE EFFECT OF MOULD CORNER SHAPE ON BOTH LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE CRACKING IN BLOOMS AND SLABS. TRIALS WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON NORMAL BSC PRODUCTION PLANTS AND THESE WILL BE SUPPORTED BY LABORATORY AND COMPUTER STUDIES WITH THE AIM OF CONSTRUCTING AN EXPLANATION OF THE MECHANISM BY WHICH CRACK DEFECTS ARE RELATED TO CORNER SHAPE. THE EFFECTS OF COOLING CONDITIONS AND STRAND SUPPORT BELOW THE MOULD WILL ALSO BE STUDIED.
