Podsumowanie kontekstu i ogólnych celów projektu

The Brainport Eindhoven Region hosted the 7th edition of the European Commission’s Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (WIRE) from 8 to 10 June 2016,. This conference of the Directorate-General Research & Innovation was co-organised by Brainport Development and served as a prime event under the flag of the Dutch EU Presidency in 2016. The WIRE 2016 conference provided a platform for policy makers, national and regional authorities, knowledge institutions and enterprises from all over Europe to have an in-depth discussion on research and innovation practices and challenges throughout the European regions, including possibilities in the current EU funding programmes and those beyond 2020. A particular focus was on extraordinary open innovation practices. In order to create impact, to upscale and aim for global competitiveness, WIRE 2016 intended to increase awareness on the importance and urgent need to build regional innovation ecosystems. The conference was therefore titled: The Power of Regional Innovation Ecosystems.

Organising the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2016 (WIRE VII) conference in the Brainport Eindhoven Region, the Netherlands. The conference was held from 8 to 10 June during the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first semester of 2016. The general objectives of WIRE VII were as follows:
• Contributing substantially to research, innovation and regional policy development
• Better positioning regional actors to enhance policy formation for effective innovative regional development
• Building on the outcomes of previous WIRE conferences

The WIRE 2016 conference considered thematic concentration of R&D and Smart Specialisation for maximising impact and will make reference to Horizon 2020 objectives for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth for the programming period beyond 2020:
• Strengthening research, technological development and innovation
• Enhancing the competitiveness of (regional) SMEs
• Increasing awareness for the need of regional actions to stimulate competitiveness
• Enhancing institutional capacity and an efficient public administration
