Cel The project objective is the development of a broadband telecommunication system able to offer the SMDS/CBDS service on DQDB-based interfaces and to accommodate native ATM traffic. The MANTIS system's networking facilities will be based on ATM technology, and the related network management system will be compliant with ITU/TS management standards.Asynchronous transmission (ATM) interworking units (AIUs) for data and connection oriented service communication between heterogeneous networks have been classified according to their relay protocol complexity and possible AIU protocol architectures have been defined. The performance of ATM interworking in terms of quality of the supported services taking into account traffic characteristics has been evaluated. New schemes for bandwidth and buffer management have been introduced with the objective to find a compromise between network resource exploitation and service performance. Useful guidelines for the design of high performance AIUs have been obtained. The results coming from project 2100, MAX, and parallel activities performed within project 5193, MAXI, represent the background know-how for MANTIS. However, a new node architecture has been defined for the MANTIS nodes, based on a cell-switching unit (called Switching Module) that the different access modules are attached to. The ATM Networking Module allows the connection of the MANTIS nodes to the ATM network operating at 155 Mbit/s. Each node implements at the same time an ESIG (European SMDS Interest Group) specs compliant MAN Switching System (MSS) and an ATM cross connect system. The SMDS Access Module will provide SMDS accesses at 2 (and, if possible, 34 Mbit/s) to the customers; the access interface shall be compliant with the ESIG SNI (Subscriber Network Interface) specs, as defined in ESIG TS-001/92 and TS-002/93. The ATM Access Module allows the connection of an ATM equipment (eg an ATM terminal) to the MANTIS system; of course, being the node able to act as a cross-connect, signalling protocols and facilities are not implemented within the ATM Access Module. The MANTIS management system will be compliant with the TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) model and adopts a hierarchical structure constituted by a special board within each node (called Node Controller Module) and a management centre (called MANTIS Operations System). The Node Controller Module carries out local management activities by controlling the node modules via two Control Buses. The Node Controller Module generally dialogues with the MANTIS Operations System via the MANTIS network. The MANTIS Operations System is physically connected to a Node Controller Module that provides routing capabilities toward the other Node Controller Module (thus implementing Operations System Access functionalities). Special efforts will be devoted to the specification of appropriate testing procedures, which will be implemented in specific equipment to be developed. Testing of the whole system will occur in a final MANTIS demonstrator. The final demonstrator will be such as to show the SMDS MSS and the ATM cross-connect capabilities of the MANTIS system. Proper commercial equipment will be selected to include some customer premises equipment within the demo and operate broadband applications. As a result of the MAXI/MANTIS original joint development plan, the implementation of an access module for FDDI networks (FDN) is currently planned in MANTIS. This module however cannot be inserted in the MANTIS node as it has been designed to be connected to a MAXI node (i.e. to a VME bus). A separate demo will be therefore arranged to show the FDN capabilities, making use of a MAXI node.
