The AICI Action was launched at the end of 1990. AIPAC is a complementary action which specifically aims to:
- increase the awareness of Portuguese SMEs of new electronic packaging and interconnection technologies such as chip-on-board (COB), multi-chip modules (MCM) and tape automated bonding (TAB)
- ensure a wider acceptance and involvement of users in these technologies
- develop a prototype application centre where Portuguese engineers and technicians can obtain direct experience of the above technologies.
Accio para o acesso da industria a circuitors integrados (AICI) is an initiative to promote the use of application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) by Portuguese small and medium sized enterprises (SME) and to increase their awareness, interest and involvement in new technological developments in microelectronics. In parallel, AICI gives these companies the impetus to participate, in the longer term, in collaborative Community supported information technology (IT) programmes.
The following activities were carried out in the first 18 month phase:
identification of approximately 200 SMEs with activities in the fields of electronics, automotive industry, mechanics and telecommunications;
organisation of 4 workshops to motivate SME managers and personnel, attended by about 250 SME representatives;
realisation and dissemination of 3 showcase demonstrator designs in the areas of consumer electronics, networks and automation;
4 further demonstrators started.
The activities planned include the selection and acquisition of the necessary know-how, setting up the relevant facilities, arranging awareness activities, seminars, workshops, etc, to attract, motivate and train industry workers, and providing a number of industrial demonstrators to prove the capabilities of the packaging and interconnection technologies.
