Podsumowanie kontekstu i ogólnych celów projektu

The objective of VIVIR is to conduct state-of-the-art research on supporting collaborative face-to-face data analysis. This is motivated by the increasing need for interdisciplinary teams to collaborate on understanding and analyzing data. In VIVIR, the idea is to help people to do by letting them organize visualizations spatially – akin to how pages of a document might be organized on a table. In doing so, it soon becomes necessary to support people in understanding how these visualizations relate to one another. For example, we might help people understand that the relationship between two visualizations, where one of them shows a subset of the other. VIVIR examines possibilities for showing relationships like these.

VIVIR contributes to two main areas. First, we have taken a structured approach to explore the opportunities for helping people understand the relationship between visualizations. We thoroughly survey existing designs and contribute an overview of these existing design solutions and a formalization of these. Second, based on collaborations with case partners, we create novel technologies for working individually, in groups, and with different devices.

We have contributed to a wide range of areas within data visualization research: novel visualization and interaction technologies for a range of form factors and interaction modalities, theoretical frameworks and formalizations that help us better understand visualization design and use, surveys about view relations and large displays, and a range of contributions in related areas, including healthcare.

While some results are still in review or being drafted, results have been published in top research venues such as IEEE VIS and ACM CHI.

VIVIR has contributed novel visualization technologies that enable people to work with data in previously new ways, has vastly broadened the reach of visualization in our work with case partners in health sciences and beyond, and has critically engaged with the use of visualization technology in the society at large.

Further, we expect to contribute formalizations in our area of research that might be used to improve definitions throughout the visualization literature and our understanding of them.
