The main results achieved in the project are described below:
Delivery of a detailed assessment of existing grid codes, regulations and policies at European and national level, which influence the implementation of the emerging technologies (e.g. RES, storages, electric vehicles (EVs) and DR) into the grid.
Highlighting the main limitations of the existing grid codes at EU level through the public consultation process and the virtual workshop with external stakeholders.
Highlihgting the needs and the challenges that the different EU countries have to confront when adopting codes and policies for emerging technologies integration into the grid.
Spotting and exporting recommendations on amendments of the existing grid codes and suggestions for new ones to serve the seamless integration of the emerging technologies and addressing the identified needs.
Definition of seven INTERPLAN use cases which have been built up for addressing the main challenges for grid operation planning.
Definition of INTERPLAN requirements, which are assumptions and prerequisites of the defined use cases, and the prerequisites for running the technical actions planned in the project.
Collection and characterization of available network models at different voltage levels with the aim to build up realistic TSO-DSO grid examples.
Identification and characterization of a clustering method for distribution grids.
Development of a methodology for generating grid equivalents, that are based on the developed INTERPLAN use cases and showcases.
Development of the INTERPLAN tool and definition of the main concepts and functionalities of the tool.
Development and simulation of the control functions embedded in the tool, associated to the five INTERPLAN showcases.
Conduction of a proof-of-concept for one of the showcases to prove the applicability of the showcases simulation within the INTERPLAN tool platform.
Performing validation by quantitative and qualitative assessments of simulation experiment results showing that all use cases accurately address the identified operation planning criteria.
Completion of a successful proof-of-concept of the INTERPLAN tool as a methodology.
As for dissemination of the project results, seven fact-sheets were created based on the final project results and more than 15 individual experts interviews were performed by the project partners with external stakeholders in order to not only further promote the project results but also receive targeted feedback on project achievements.
Beyond the interviews with key experts, six workshops and sessions were organized, three of which took place in the last months of the project to present the final outcomes and interact with potential users. Due to the Covid-19, it was no possible to organize a physical final workshop as planned, but three online workshops were organized instead.
Moreover, to further increase INTERPLAN’s reach especially among the scientific community, the project was presented at several international scientific events through publications, verbal presentations and posters, obtaining a very good level of networking activities and dissemination of the results attained.
Regarding interaction with other relevant projects and initiatives, it is worth to mention that, only during the final project year, INTERPLAN partners cooperated with stakeholders of 21 EU-funded projects, as well as with national projects, European programmes, platforms and global initiatives. These collaborations have been fruitful and brought important feedback and insights to the project partners.
As for the exploitation plan, the main stakeholders for the project’s results were identified in TSOs, DSOs and regional security coordinators, since the INTERPLAN tool is aiming to achieve the operation planning of an integrated grid from the perspective of these grid operators through the efficient usage of RES and emerging technologies to solve operation issues occurring at all grid levels. The exploitation plan of INTERPLAN project, which is based on the instructions and guidelines provided by the EC, outlines and elaborates the key project exploitable results and their market potential and expected impacts, which are consisting of:
· integrated grid operation planning tool
· embedded control functions in the use cases of the tool
· analysis of grid codes
· grid clustering and equivalenting method
· further developments of the OpSim co-simulation tool
