Massive Star Formation through the Universe

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - MSTAR (Massive Star Formation through the Universe)

This project aims to understand how massive stars and star clusters form. It has societal importance, since it helps humanity understand the origins of cosmic structures, including galaxies, stars and planets. The overall objectives are develop new theoretical models and simulations of massive star and star cluster formation and then to test them observationally.
Work on theoretical modeling of individual massive star formation has been carried out, including simulations of initial pre-stellar cores and simulations of protostellar cores. Theoretical work on star cluster formation has also been performed. Theoretical work on massive star formation in the early universe potentially leading to supermassive black hole formation has been carried out. Work on testing the above theoretical models has been undertaken.
We have carried out sophisticated numerical simulations of pre-stellar cores that are beyond the state of the art. We have carried out numerical simulations of star cluster formation that are beyond the state of the art. We have carried out observational projects that are beyond the state of the art, especially with ALMA, SOFIA and the Hubble Space Telescope.
