The ERC POC E-DURA allowed to perform the first steps of bringing the e-dura technology from the laboratory towards the clinical markets. e-dura is a soft neurotechnology that allows to manufacture a new generation of extremely compliant implantable electrodes that can record from and/or stimulate the brain, spinal cord or nerves. This technology promises advanced diagnostics and therapies for patients suffering from trauma and neurological disorders.
The ERC POC allowed to identify a business case for the technology and a first market entry for a first product using this technology: the SOFT ECoG. The SOFT ECoG is a brain electrode array to be positioned at the surface of the cerebral cortex and designed to be implanted for a period of up to 30 days. It can be used to monitor seizures in drug-resistant epilepsy patients or to perform intra-operative neuromonitoring during brain tumor resection in order to avoid damaging critical parts of the brain.
During the ERC POC, we validated the possibility to manufacture and surgically manipulate human-scale electrodes for the brain, and initiated all the regulatory, clinical and quality work necessary to bring the SOFT ECoG to the clinic.
A start-up company, Neurosoft Bioelectronics, will now undertake these activities to bring these devices and technologies to market.
