Measurement of the BRDF over the visible spectral range at a submillimeter scale (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

For some materials such as fabric, wood or leathers, the distance of observation greatly influences its appearance. Knowing the optical properties at a micrometric scale of these materials is important to understand and reproduce the appearance of the full object. However, there is no existing goniospectrophotometer that can perform BRDF measurement at a submillimetric scale. In fact, decreasing the spatial resolution of BRDF measurements brings forward specific metrological issues that have so far not been addressed. During the project, we will build a set-up allowing to investigate BRDF at a micrometric scale and to establish a multi-scale traceability between small measurement areas and classic measurement areas.

To establish a multi-scale traceability between small measurement areas and classic measurement areas we have developed a new goniospectrophotometer which can measure the BRDF in micron scale. As we have described in our previous deliverable that the knowledge about optical properties at a micrometric scale of materials is important to understand and reproduce the appearance of the full object. So, to prove the difference of measurement in micron scale we will perform a comparative study by measuring BRDF with illumination beam of different scale like: 100micron,1mm and 1cm. And to validate our measurement we will develop new model of our customized sample. In further this procedure can be applied to natural (wood, leather, fabric etc.) and 3D printed materials.
