The introduction of nanotechnologies in aluminium and polymeric composites in today’s industrialized systems as part of advanced materials and manufacturing processes in different sectors depend very much on understanding all basic processes that will contribute to overcoming the barriers that materials are currently facing to be introduced into the market. The main objective OASIS project pursues is to develop and organize a sustainable Open Innovation Test Bed for innovative scale-up of smart lightweight aluminium and polymer-based composite compounds and products to which Companies - and more precisely SMEs - can gain access through a Single Entry Point to develop, test and adopt, new lightweight, high performance, multifunctional, safe and environmentally friendly high value materials, components and structures in a cost-effective and sustainable way. The Open Innovation Test Bed will give access to an ecosystem of 12 nanotechnology manufacturing pilot lines, operating under a sustainable manufacturing framework. Technological services including Material selection, Manufacturing processes, Product and process Design, Modelling & simulation, Characterisation & testing, Sustainable-manufacturing diagnosis, Environmental and nanosafety, Safe-by-design approaches and Life cycle analysis as well as business support services for access to finance and optimised business plans definition associated to the 12 pilot lines close OASIS one-stop full package offer.
1.The starting point of the OASIS project is 12 Pilot Lines (PLs) to provide qualified nano-materials, nano-intermediates and nano-enabled products to meet industrial needs and accelerate market uptake of innovative lightweight multifunctional products: 3 PLs for nanoscale structures in unprocessed form with intrinsic functionalities, 5 PLs for intermediate product with nanoscale features and 4 Pilot Lines for Nano-enabled products.
The pilot lines upscaling (production rate) and upgrading (in-line control) activities were finalized.
2.The 12 PLs will operate under the OASIS Sustainable Nano-manufacturing Framework (OASIS-SNF). Based on the software tool created during the first period to support the implementation and development of the SNF in the Pilot Lines, a diagnosis will be established, together with a customized improvement plan, for each PL. Final assessment on sustainable nano-manufacturing level will be performed in 3RP.
3.OASIS ecosystem gathers the 12 PLs and associated technological and business support services. A high added-value catalogue accessible to industries and users through the project website and promoted with organisations, webinars and workshops was created and will be updated and improved until the end of the project. The public catalogue proves the high potential and quality of services the SEP can offer. The open call was the first opportunity to test and propose the catalogue to applicants for Democases.
4.OASIS ecosystem aims to become a Single entry point (SEP). With that purpose, partners worked to establish the operation of the SEP, its strategic direction, the way it is going to create and provide value and the organisation structure, appropriate legal entity and governance rules. This establishment will pass through the consideration of the needs and expectations from all internal and external stakeholders that will end with the definition of the detailed list of activities as well as the establishment of the necessary qualification scheme for ensuring the required quality to meet the customer’s requirements.
5.One of the strengths of the Project relies on the 6 Showcases, led by global leaders representing high impact sectors (transportation, construction and energy) that have the opportunity to implement in real cases the developed tangible materials and components through the 12 PLs and associated services. During the first period, ACC, THA, VDL, AIR, PLE and FORD have started to work on the development of the Showcases, defining specifications, identifying pilot lines and services. During the second period, the development was completed, demonstrators were produced and performances were assessed through defined KPIs.
6.Open calls for Democases to validate the SEP and ensure the sustainability of the OITB ecosystem were prepared during the first period. Open calls were launched during the second period, with the aim to open OASIS PLs and associated services to external applicants. They accessed the open call through the application module for creation and submission of Democase proposals available at the project’s website.
The Democase proposals were evaluated according to previously defined procedures. For selected Democases, a Service Delivery Manager was assigned, the services providers and associated resources necessary to develop the Democases were defined, and a collaboration agreement was signed between OASIS and the customer.
7.Democases act as the first direct business experience of the OITB. The selected projects are developed following quality management processes previously defined. The development involved technical and non-technical services providers identified according to the customer’s needs. Non-technical services support the end-users to industrialisation and commercialisation stages. At the end of the development period, the performances of the Democases are assessed and the efficiency of the OITB to answer the Democases is evaluated.
8.Showcases previously developed provided actual on-the-ground testing of the efficiency of the OITB. Interviews were performed to gather feedback from service providers and beneficiary to evaluate the performance of the OITB concept. An exploitation strategy was defined based on business expectations of each service provider.
9.To ensure the sustainability of the SEP beyond project’s end, a validation/refinement of its definition, including its missions, activities, procedures, legal form, financial and governance model was engaged. It was based on the Showcases and Democases experiences.
10.Regular dissemination of project results, events (such as Open Calls) and news. Website development and update with catalogue of services, showcases information to attract users.
11.In addition, the consortium is currently working in a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA), that is translating the OASIS-SNF into a CEN standardisation deliverable (Open access). Note that the sister project INNOMEM is also participating in this CWA.
The Innovation brought by the OASIS project
- Unique combination of European PLs, technological & non-technological services throughout the entire value chain in one OITB.
- Access via a SEP providing direct connection to a set of relevant actors for easier and accelerated innovation and product commercialization.
- Open access to multiple actors: companies, SMEs, individual, academia, RTOs.
- “Right material at the right place” approach for optimized design by combination of materials: products based on metal or/and on polymers.
- User involvement: OASIS will not only deliver direct services but will also, in the whole development process, deliver the “education” on nanotechnologies to prepare future technology transfer. Adapting to the user’s company size and experience on nanotechnology will be at the core of business management by the SEP.
- Sustainable manufacturing ecosystem, involving demanding common rules for quality, environment, safety and productivity.
