The desire of explore to reach new frontiers

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - Wanderlust (The desire of explore to reach new frontiers)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2019-02-01 do 2019-11-30

Wanderlust, Zaragoza ERN in their 8 and 9th edition, were designed to aproach researchers to general public. Taking as a starting point the Wanderlust spirit understood as the passion to discover the unknown, we planned an event in which the research would represent that passion to know and dicovering. We wanted to create a unique experience where both children and adults could live and experience “the adventure of discovering”.
The main objective was to show the work of researchers. For most of the people, the researchers’ work is kind of unknown, or they are not sure of what they do.To change this, researchers took their work to the street to show people what they do, how they do it, what is the importance and dimension of their job.
On a more detailed level, the objectives of the program are:
- Show the dimension of research and the importance of the researchers’ job in our
daily life.
- Show the importance of research, how society cannot move forward without research
- Generate interest and arouse curiosity for research in the general public.
- Display the fun side of research
- Foster scientific vocations in youngsters.
During the 2 editions of the European, we have organised more than 100 activities and had the participation of more than 200 researchers per edition.
Both editions of the ERN had a high participation of institutions, projects and researchers, which has allowed us to offer a wide, varied and quality program.
We tried to offer varied activities, different from each other, and that are framed in different fields within the research in order to reach a greater and more varied number of people.
The activities took place in 2 different spaces:
CaixaForum building in Zaragoza, a well-known place in the city and with a very particular architecture. The activities occupied the whole building, and were divided into different zones:
- Open air activities
- Workshops
- Scientific shows and performances
- Exhibitions
- Social activities

2. Museo del Fuego y de los Bomberos. It was a strategic location for us, since it is located in a depressed area of the city, where the population does not usually go to cultural events. It was very important for us to reach these subrepresented groups, and integrate them into our activities.
- Guided tour
- Workshop
- Scientific show

We offered 78 activities, 44 research centres or groups and more than 200 researchers participating. Total number of participants: 8000 people in CaixaForum and 1800 in the Firefighters’ Museum.
We have managed to convert a science action into a cultural festival for all types of audicences in which we merge science and performative arts. The event has become a mandatory event for lovers of science and culture, and is already a reference event in the city's cultural programming.

PROMOTION AND DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES: to attract the maximum number of people to the event, transferring the idea that research can be for everyone, we designed actions addressed to general public as well as to specific groups.
Beyond this, we also worked focusing on the following goals:
- Dissemination of the research activities of research centres and Institutes.
- Point out the value of the researchers’ job and its importance in our daily lives.
- Show in a clear and simple way what research is and how it is present in our day-to-day life.
- Generate interest and awareness in different research projects and programmes.
- Foster scientific vocations among young students.

We paid especial attention to digital platforms, where we tried to go viral with some selected activities. We reached a great audience using social networks, where we launched different activities.
As for the off-line dissemination, it was also an important factor in the campaign, to reach another segment of the population, which is not so used to internet and social networks but who are also potential participants in event.
We have maintained some values that have allowed us to consolidate this event as a city event, a cultural event open to all citizens where we put into value the figure and job of researchers.
We gave a training to researchers about How to communicate science to general public, and as a result of this, the autonomy of all researchers and participants in activities has been much better.
The activities where we have tried new things and made mixtures between disciplines worked very well.
As an element to highlight in both cases, all workshops that needed a previous registration completed their capacity the same day opened the registrations and we even had a waiting list.
After the surveys carried out on the activities, the participants highlighted the great offer and diversity of workshops.

The audience profile of the European Researchers’ Night 2019 celebrated in Zaragoza was very diverse regarding gender and age. Some had attended previous editions of the event, and the majority showed a high interest in science.
The general opinion is that the frequency of this type of activities in Zaragoza is insufficient, which is perhaps why most of the attendees participated actively in several activities during the event.
The level of studies is high in general. However, there is no relevant presence of public with scientific training nor professional work related to science.

The valuation of the activities has been thoroughly positive, with scores between 5 and 6, on a scale from 1 to 6 points, in almost all aspects evaluated: satisfaction, achievement of expectations, acquisition of new knowledge and changes in the point of view about research.
In the same way, in general terms the event has also obtained very high ratings, between 4.5 and 6 points on a scale from 1 to 6 points, for aspects such as organization, number of activities, variety of topics of the activities, schedules of the activities, facilities and promotion of the event.
General satisfaction with the event was very high and attendants showed it in their ratings. Adolescents and children stated to have learned a lot and discovered new insights into science.
The high level of satisfaction of the public with the activities and the event in general have meant a massive intention to repeat in future editions and to recommend the event to other people.
Regarding researchers, they also rated the event with a high score, although lower than that from the public. They also showed their general satisfaction and their intention to repeat in future editions and to recommend the participation in the event to other researchers.

The study shows population considers the current role of the researchers as very important but little valued and recognized.
The most used adjectives to describe the figure of the researcher are all of positive connotation.

Impact for collaborating entities
Comparing the results of spontaneous recognition of research programs or centres before, during and after the event, significant evolution can be showed. Before the event, 11 research centres were mentioned. During the event they were over 40 and after the event they were fewer than ‘during‘, but more than in the ‘before’ phase.
