Towards local circular economy: biomass-based pyrogasification process for the production of green hydrogen

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Hydrogreen (Towards local circular economy: biomass-based pyrogasification process for the production of green hydrogen)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2018-11-01 do 2019-02-28

With a global population that expands to more than 9 billion by 2040 and the world economy growing at a 3.4% average rate, the world energy demands is expected to grow more than 25% to 2040 requiring €2 trillion a year of investment in new energy supply. Nowadays, the increased demand is still being met largely by reserves of fossil fuel that emit greenhouse gases and, moreover, are diminishing and becoming increasingly expensive. Hydrogen has appeared in numerous studies as the only alternative fuel that may simultaneously reduce a country's dependence on foreign oil and significantly reduce greenhouse gases.
This feasibility study defines a feasible roadmap in all technical, commercial and financial aspects to achieve Hydrogreen –our cost-effective green hydrogen project– industrialization. The main activities are: upgrading the preparation of our raw material, optimisation and validation of hydrogen production, setting up our hydrogen purification, storage and distribution systems, and the integration of all the technologies into the demonstrator unit. We estimate an investment of €3.67M with €2.5M as part of SME Instrument phase 2 funds and with a ROI of 7.86 at 10 years.
TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT. We have determined the technical aspects of the several technologies involved in our production system needed to be upgraded and defined a work plan, risks and contingency.
COMMERCIAL VIAVILITY. An in-depth analysis showed the most suitable areas in the EU to set our industrial plants and commercialise Hydrogreen. We identified potential stakeholders and distribution channels, and defined a communication and dissemination plan which includes exploitation of the demonstrator.
FINANCIAL PLAN. T´Air Energies will need €2.50 million from the Phase 2 SMEI and self-cover the remaining €1.17 million to bring Hydrogreen to market. The feasibility study shows the advantages of Hydrogreen over competitors´ hydrogen production systems, and confirms its technical feasibility and commercial profitability.
Currently there are no effective methods to produce green hydrogen. Hydrogreen will i) help reducing green gas emissions and EU energy dependency, ii) promote circular economy, iii) boost local economies, and iv) have a huge impact on our company.
