i3-MARKET is a fully open-source backplane platform that can be used as a set of support tools or a standalone platform implementation of data economy. A new Data-as-a-Service paradigm where the data can be traded and commercialized securely and transparently and with total liberty at the local and global scale directly from the data producer if necessary, while at the same time catapulting disruptive data-centric applications and services. i3-MARKET takes a step forward and provides a blueprint platform providing an open architecture with Free Open Source Software (FOSS) support tools for this maturity vision/process. i3-MARKET project design principles and Software Engineering specifications are the results of shared perspectives from a representative global group of experts, providing a common vision in the data economy and identifying impacts and business opportunities in the different areas where data is produced.

The i3-MARKET project has delivered its objectives by deploying the i3-MARKET backplane reference implemented architecture, including tools, techniques, processes, and best practices enabling an ecosystem at large for data operators and thus interconnect data marketplace infrastructures in an interoperable way, while at the same time facilitating data providers and solution providers in annotating and deploying large scale datasets that transcend the (silo) boundaries of individual data marketplaces. The i3-MARKET blueprint experimental framework includes a Software Development Kit (SDK) middleware for easy-to-use software development and tools for deploying additional functionalities implemented according to particular needs and managing interoperable datasets applications, processes for ensuring the operation of interoperable applications.
The i3-MARKET project delivered a blueprint reference implementation for an architecture that enables the connectivity of data marketplaces, the i3-MARKET backplane is today a key enabler for incentivizing the industrial data market economy embracing the latest European Commission Digital Single Market strategy. The activities in i3-MARKET were distributed in 7 Work Packages (WPs) that are organized cohesively:

WP2 Use Cases, Requirements, and Overall i3-MARKET Architecture Specifications collected the feedback from the different stakeholders during the testing and deployment was crucial for the improvement of the i3-MARKET platform, in order to integrate the feedback adequately a governance model was implemented following the agile methodology focused on setting the prioritization of features and functionalities. This WP finalized the definition of use cases and the designs of the i3-MARKET Reference Architecture.

WP3 Trust, Security, and Privacy Solutions for Securing Data Marketplaces, This work package focused on delivering state-of-the-art technologies, interfaces, methods, and solutions for enabling the i3-MARKET with proper trustworthy levels, supported by technologies that offer cyber-security and privacy of the data and most critical identity management using the most advance techniques in self-sovereign identities and the innovative approach on using it in federating data markets. The work package also delivered the data access and transfer component following the OpenAPI enabling interface in a standard way with the generation of smart contracts, wallets, and a monetization system.

WP4 i3-MARKET Backplane for the Integration of Data Platforms and Market Economy Overview, the interoperability is crucial for enabling the exchange of information, this work package implemented the i3-MARKET Backplane in the form of an access gateway and included software tools to facilitate the integration and deployment i.e. and SDK and a Web-Based delivered as reference Implementations (RI), both including multiple Application Programming Interface (API), this design allows the use of the API and their associated services in data marketplaces and data spaces independently of the domain which the data assets belong. The data asset resources are also described using semantic metadata to enable (semi-) automated discovery, selection, and access to the marketplaces and backplane registries with decentralized storage.

WP5 i3-MARKET Pilots Deployment Realisation and Validation demonstrated the capability to instantiate the i3-MARKET Backplane in different infrastructures through exemplary use cases, in three Industry driven Pilots, so as to assess the feasibility and applicability of the integration and federation techniques, procedures and functions developed during the project lifetime. WP5 would also provide evaluation and feedback to other WPs based on experience from pilots and applications that were deployed in collaboration with SMEs.

WP6 Sustainability, Business Exploitation, and Dissemination, this work package provided the economic analysis to propose models and data pricing tools for the communities outside of the project; from promotion and engagement of new customers to the front-line support of current users, and the long-term exploitation of results and sustainability for the project itself. The Open Source ecosystem enlargement was the core of this period and included the creation of processes, responsibilities, and targets to release the code in different git platforms and at the same time have its own open-source portal and online documentation. In this WP we also manage the legal and regulatory aspects.
i3-MARKET Project empowers Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) paradigm for sharing and trading data in a secure manner

● i3-MARKET brings Data as a Service close to users by means of Backplane and Open APIs Standard.
● The i3-MARKET infrastructure enables to use of DaaS API (i.e. i3-MARKET SDK or i3-MARKET APIs)

i3-MARKET project has implemented the missing link (backplane and tools) between Data Marketplaces, building a trusted, interoperable, and decentralized European data marketplace backplane implementing as follows:

● Self-sovereign identities in order to support global-scale identity management and the ability to associate personal data with end users in a trusted and traceable manner.
● Smart wallet framework that enables data owners to directly interact with smart contracts related to their data in order to give or revoke their consent for the anticipated data exchange.

The i3-MARKET project works beyond the state of the art on integrating data marketplace, platforms, and associated silo applications.

● Decentralised storage and access to semantic descriptions of the offered data assets in order to enable data discovery across today’s silos.
● Tokenisation technology to provide a transparent, cost-efficient, and fast payment solution among the participating data spaces and marketplaces.
● Secure Semantic Data Model Repository that enables data consumers to efficiently discover and access data assets.

The i3-MARKET backplane enables to use of DaaS API (i.e. the i3-MARKET SDK or the i3-MARKET APIs) for executing experiments over multiple federated data marketplaces.

● Immutable and auditable smart contracts for the trading of data assets across data space and marketplace boundaries.
● Legal framework was developed and innovative business models for incentivizing the sharing and trading of data assets.
