PROBLEM
Transport represents almost a quarter of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions and is the main cause of air pollution in cities which concentrate 75% of the population in the EU and account for 60-80% of CO2 emissions2. In this context, only in Europe there are more than 252 Million of passenger cars, out of which 3.78 Million corresponds to taxis and hiring cars with drivers, responsible of 12% of total EU emissions of CO2 and 41% of overall EU transport emissions3. In this context, there is an increasing pressure on the governmental and public institutions to reduce the carbon footprint and the deadly amount of GHG emitted by all forms of transport (40% reduction by 2030). Among the measures lately taken in the largest European citie is the obligation of all new taxis to be low or zero emissions vehicles. This measure will imply a cut down of 75,000 CO2e Tn/year and the gradual shift towards EV/HEV in the passenger drivers sector.
The aim is moving towards low and zero emissions vehicles adoption; however there are still some major constraints for all the end-users of EV/HEV, which are especially painful for the taxi and car hiring sector:
1) High acquisition cost: an EV/HEV selling price is between 12,000€ and 14,000€ more expensive than its equivalent petrol model.
2) Lack of cost-effective solutions for battery replacement: Battery is the key element of EV/HEV as its proper functioning ensures the autonomy of the car and thus its amortisation for the professional drivers. This means spending up to 70% of the EV/HEV acquisition cost only in battery maintenance.
WWith BATT3RY project, the objectives are to reduce the economic and environmental impact of the batteries. With Batt3ry, there is a second life for the battery replacing the damaged cell for another new ones, and adapting the battery BMS.
First of all the main challenge is to finish the integration of the elements in a final product in its final commercial form into EV/HEVs to have it ready for its market launch into the EV/HEV repairing services. After, adjust production processes for scaling up and cut down on costs; and finally commercialisation of the product
IMPORTANT FOR SOCIETY
Batt3ry is important for society due to the innovation contributes to the development of a greater sustainable mobility. In addition, BATT3RY is in line with the Circular Economy EU Legislation.
With Batt3Ry is achieved two important issues for society:
1. Reduce the impact of use raw material, for new batteries.
2. Reconditioning se batteries with high guarantees, with less economic and environmental impact for end users and society.
