Cel To demonstrate a model for promoting (i) green and sustainable tourism; (ii) education and awareness raising on environmental issues; (iii) the fruitful interaction of tourism with environmental conservation via a fund-raising Trust, and programme of conservation projects. This UK pilot project demonstrates the innovative concept of the joint establishment and operation of an Environmental Action Trust linked to a Countryside Education and Interpretation Centre. The project is to be based at the Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight, an area of high landscape-value whose economy is dependent on tourism revenue. The Countryside Centre's educational facilities will act as a model for the pioneering use of audio-visual technology as an aid to understanding and respecting the natural environment. The Environmental Trust will have independent charitable status within the project. It wll form a test bed for trialing methods of fund-raising from the tourism industry, and will be an effective public/private sector coordinating mechanism for the pooling of funds and the implentation of conservation projects. The Trust will derive a proportion of its income from the operation of the Countryside Centre as a visitor attraction. The project will identify the administrative steps required to develop and sustain the concept, the results to be widely disseminated with a view to assisting the implentation of similar projects elsewhere.
