Modes of genome evolution during major metazoan transitions

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - METASCALE (Modes of genome evolution during major metazoan transitions)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2021-07-01 do 2022-12-31

The METASCALE project aims to quantify the modes of animal genome evolution. Whether and how the genomes of phylogenetically divergent animal clades show similar or divergent evolutionary trajectories has so far been only qualitatively studied in a few selected cases. The project aims to provide for quantitative framework to study macro-evolutionary processes across all animal genomes. As such, it has the potential to lay the foundation for cross-scale genome comparisons and, through understanding the mechanistic or functional constraints on the macro-evolutionary trajectories, lead to more accurate predictive genomics.
The team has built the tools and submitted/published key papers outlining the "language" of major evolutionary transitions in animal genomes (such as chromosomal algebra and "operations"). The team has also collected key data for the main model species of the proposal (Euprymna scolopes). The team has also worked on the first implementation of database structures to study the different levels of genome organization.
Our main goal for the next period is to generalize the published (in the current reporting period) chromosomal algebra approach towards other scales of genome organization and their evolution.
