French Institute for Advanced Study

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - FIAS (French Institute for Advanced Study)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2020-09-01 do 2022-08-31

The French Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme (FIAS) started in 2020 as a new collaborative incoming mobility Programme. The programme proposes to strengthen scholarship and mobility in the Social Sciences and Humanities by enlarging and upgrading the offering of scientific residencies in France to international experienced researchers. It provides SSH scholars worldwide the possibility to spend one academic year in four of France’s most innovative scientific regions. The four French Institutes for Advanced Study of Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Montpellier and Paris teamed up to propose a unified and simplified entry point to their much-coveted scientific residencies. Since 2021, the programme facilitated the introduction of new IAS in the consortium Loire-Valley (Orléans-Tours) and Nantes.

FIAS-FP supports individual research as fellows, released from teaching and academic commitments, conduct in unsegmented time bottom-up research with the greatest freedom, with the IAS strong scientific and extra-academic support. The FIAS-FP experience is designed to provide fellows with the material and intellectual conditions that will generate a significant boost to their professional careers:

1. It enables fellows to produce in a short time what would have taken years to do in the fragmented time at their home institutions (because of administration and teaching commitments);
2. They get exposed to the collective benevolent intelligence of international and multidisciplinary cohorts of fellows, which brings their work to a higher, and often transdisciplinary level;
3. This new international and interdisciplinary network is an asset for scholarship and project building;
4. They are offered a vast range of training opportunities to improve their research and non-academic skills.

FIAS-FP is thus designed to foster intellectual exchanges amongst fellows and with the local scientific community, exposing them to innovative methods, opening new theoretical horizons, and creating international transdisciplinary networks among fellows and beyond.

FIAS-FP will offer 120 fellowships of 10-month to experienced SSH researchers over a 60-month period.
Since 2020, the programme launched three calls for applications (2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2023/2024), managed two selection processes (for the academic years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023) and hosted the first cohort of fellows (2021/2022).

The three calls for applications have been widely disseminated via the Internet and thanks to the activation of all partnering institutions’ research networks. Pooling the consortium’s resources and networks, FIAS reached a considerable community of researchers around the world. The calls for applications have attracted 1201 applications. The geographical distribution of applications is as follows: Africa 7%, Asia/Oceania 9%, Eastern Europe 10%, Middle East 5%, North America 20%, South/central America 15%, Western Europe 33%.

The completion of the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 evaluation process resulted in the selection of 44 candidates. The first cohort of fellows arrived to the host IAS in September/October 2021. Along their residencies, all fellows have benefited from the support of the IAS to conduct their research, to make academic connexions, and to organize or participate seminars and conferences. These fruitful residencies enabled the FIAS fellows to finalize many projects and to initiate new collaborations. They also took part in a series of training opportunities to improve their research and non-academic skills such as: Research funding opportunities for SSH scholars, ERC funding schemes, Open Data, Writing to a non-academic audience, Open Science and Ethics in research projects proposals.
The second cohort of fellows will arrive to the host institutes on September/October 2022 and end their residencies on June/July 2023.

Along their residencies, all fellows will benefit from the support of the IAS to conduct their research, to make academic connexions, and to organize or participate in seminars and conferences, enabling them to finalize projects and to initiate new international collaborations.
Over the whole Grant Agreement period, the Programme will launch and manage four calls for applications and will welcome four cohorts of fellows among the IAS. The estimated total number of fellows invited over the four years is 120.
