OSM is building the next generation framework for globally distributed electronic commerce and virtual trading market systems. OSM will deliver advanced Java based desktop components supporting a catalogue browsing, service inspection, monitoring and construction tools. Below the desktop the OSM team are building CORBA compliant facilities providing innovative techniques for federated service management based on independent managed disclosure policies. OSM will deliver a suite of commerce facilities covering contract and commercial service management, cataloguing, brokering and agencies enabling globally open competitive electronic marketplaces.
A Core Facilities Platform composed of underlying business object framework (session, process, role and policy services); a Selection Facility supporting negotiation of specifications leading to the selection of a common policy; a Profile Facility supporting structured interchange of semantic data; Catalogue Facility supporting the creation of locally managed collections of commercial service and contract templates; an Object Browser, supporting inspection, presentation and navigation of contained items, process and session management support; Commerce Services and Contract Facilities supporting multiple interfaces (consumer, supplier, third-parties), service and contract life-cycle descriptions, declared transition operators and declaration of allowable operations within a specific state/role relationship. Agency Facility providing a formal interface to a legal point-of-presence in an electronic marketplace.

Expected Impact
A direct impact of OSM will be the evolution of an intermediate brokerage marketplace - organisations specialising in the supply of services into specific domains, vertical market segments and geographic regions. Service transactions will progress towards higher collaborative participation over shorter periods.

Technical Approach
Market stimulation of an open marketplace for service and asset brokerage will be achieved through public deployment of an operation transatlantic service infrastructure and supporting tools allowing negotiated service access and asset delivery.
The OSM architecture will be developed enabling a framework within which service management, brokering and provider interfaces can be constructed with implementation independence.
Technical Validation of the architecture will be undertaken through the construction and deployment of a series of platforms using a CORBA 2.0 distributed service infrastructure and integration with Java virtual machines. The project will pursue standardisation of OSM component interfaces within the Object Management Group (OMG) Electronic Commerce Domain Task Force (ECDTF).

Summary of Trials
User and Service Centred Trials will be undertaken in the area of news media content management and delivery involving organisations in Germany and France. Service centred trials will focus on professional service catalogues across competitive suppliers.
Transatlantic trials will be undertaken though public release of OSM tools and supported through a help desk. Industry participation will be promoted through an open OSM Industry Forum.
Key Issues
Desktop Integration - The interface between human users, catalogues and services must support the separate interests of centralised management versus the distributed presentation of service content across the working media and business processes of the end-user.
Support for Non-Standard Service Management - New services must be deployable without the requirement for formal standardisation. Mechanisms are needed to declare and enforce the negotiated state of service offers enabling predictable behaviour across consumer, supplier and third-parties.
