FISH PROTECTION IN AQUACULTURE : IMPROVEMENT OF VACCINE EFFICACY BY STUDYING STIMULATION OF THE FISH IMMUNE RESPONSE

Ziel

This project will focus on the stimulation of a protective immune response in fish, the understanding of the mechanisms involved and further the ability to design optimal vaccines allowing a high protective immunity. Two fish species will be studied: salmonids (rainbow trout, Oncorhyncus mykiss, and salmon, Salmo salar) and cypronids (carp, Cyprinus carpio L.), and immune stimulation will be performed with two viral pathogens: the SVC virus (Spring Viremia of Carp) and the VHS virus (Viral Haemorrhagic Septicemia) infecting salmonids. We will use in particular a well characterized antigen from these viruses, the G protein which will be produced in microorganisms and purified.

The stimulation of a protective immune response is divided into various essential steps that requires multi-disciplinary analysis: antibody production, antigen presentation, B-cells stimulation and T-cells functions, cytotoxicity, and cytokine-mediated response. These studies will lead to the determination of the best immunisation and design of optimal immunogens for fish vaccination.
