The scientifc and technical objectives of the proposal concems the design of a sub millimetric micro pressure probe with fast response time for the measurement of intemal airway pressure of articificial respiration in intensive care and anesthesia. The probe would be small enough to be inserted in a specifically designed tracheal tubing. It would thus allow direct and reliable measurement of pressure in patient airways. This would represent a significant improvement compared to conventional pressure probe which mus be located in an extemal patient circuit and thus subject to distortions induced by tracheal tubings an other obstacles. In addtion to improved patient safety this new technology would allow the development of new ventilation modes and improved therapy. Market potential is considerable since this probe and tracheal tubing device should replace conventional tracheal tubings which are used on thousands of patients each year in Europe. Research is necessary to: design the micro probe and specific tracheal tubing design the electronic and signal analysis software perform in vHro and vivi clinical trials define adapted manufacturing process The skills developped within such programme could then be used to design highly integrated microfunctions for surveillance of other physilogical parameters such as flow, temperature, humidity.
