Overall demand for health care is on the rise in industrialised countries, part icularly on account of the ageing of the population. Pressure on health expenditure necessitates maximising cost efficiency for every medical procedure. One of the objectives of the development of the endoscopic laser assisted surgery is to reduce costs by lowering morbidity, reducing recovery time and shortening hospital stays. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of which endoscopy is an excellent example, specifically benefits society by lowering overall medical expenses and benefits patients by reducing discomfort. Since MIS techniques do not entail major injury to the body, they produce less pain and fewer scars. Patient can resume oral food intake sooner, get back on their feet more quickly, and consequently have a lower risk of complications. The recovery period is also shorter. The patient's sick leave costs less for the national health care and disrupts his or her professional activity less. The aim of this project is to reduce these medical expenses by developing a laser application for the endoscopic surgery. The advantages of this new surgical technique for patients are:
- i mproved therapeutic results:
- less post operative pain and trauma:
- less reco very time than traditional surgery:
- fewer complications than traditional surgery In this project, we will use the Nd:YAP laser, as it has the following qualities:
- good cutting quality:
- good cauterising and coagulating effect - small dimensions :
- transmission through an optical fibre to be used in an endoscope
The objective of this project is to develop an indispensable surgical equipment for the operating wing, for all the endoscopic or minimal external s urgery operations, in hospitals or clinics. It will have the following characteristics:
- compact, mobile, aesthetic, ergonomic and cheap apparatus,:
- intermittent use, with a use rate inferior to 20% of the time,:
- laser beam transmitted through an optical fibre (diameter:
300, 400 mm and/or 600, mm),:
- action (cutting, ablation, coagulation) on the soft tissues,:
- action (piercing, ablation, cauterisation) on the tough tissues (bones, cartilage),:
- good emostase,:
- reduced tissue necrosis.
