NEW PROCESS FOR THE RECYCLING AND IMMOBILIZATION OF METALS IN JAROSITE

Cel

Treatment of jarositic wastes from the zinc industry is a costly procedure, whereas storage in lined basins will eventually result in leakage of heavy metal containing solutions to the groundwater and, thus, pose a threat to the environment. A novel technology(the JARMEST process)treating the jarosite wastes with organic waste streams, was invented by one of the partners to this proposal. The process has been tested in laboratory experiments which produce a solid waste with high metal concentrations and a relatively clear effluent with low metal concentrations. The tests strongly indicate the viability of this waste-to-waste process on an industrial scale. The proposed research concerns the further development into a continuous process, using a vertical high pressure reactor, and should result into a low cost,energy-efficient decontamination technology with the benefits of the recovery of a considerable amount of metals contained in the jarositic waste. The major tasks of the research are grouped as follows:

-test runs on laboratory scale with jarosites of different composition.
-characterization and metallurgical treatment of the solids resulting from the reaction; recycling and/or immobilization of the contained metals.
-decontamination to environmentally acceptable standards of the effluent.
-upgrading of the process to a (semi)-continuous scale in the vertical reactor.
-economic and technical evaluation and basic design of a pilot plant.
