PLASMA ENHANCED DEPOSITION OF CORROSION AND WEAR RESISTANT COATINGS

Cel

The objective is the development of industrially compatible plasma assisted processes for the deposition of corrosion and wear resistant layers on high duty parts of industrial products and on cutting tools to enhance lifetime and reliability.
Researchers in this project developed plasma-assisted coatings that are able to minimize corrosion and improve the wear resistance of heavy-duty industrial parts and cutting tools. Several coatings were developed combining boron, zirconium, and silicon with carbon, and metallic coatings based on chromium and tantalum. Many of the coatings and the deposition methods have been successfully tested in industrial environments.
The central theme will be the development of a metal-carbon layer by plasma assisted deposition. To build experience towards this end, the deposition of a pure metal by Plasma CVD is to be studied. The metal layers (such as chromium and Tantalum) will be explored as corrosion resistant layers. Also the deposition of i-carbon by plasma assisted deposition will be studied to support the Me-C deposition experiments. The whole thrust of the research will necessarily lead to the development of diamonds films by means of Plasma CVD and PVD.
