Large Area Neutral Density Solid State Electrochromic Coating for I mproved Performance of Displays, Automative and Architectural Glass

Cel

The consortium proposes to develop an electrochromic
coating technology and to build a working prototype to
demonstrate a uniquely tunable glass coating. Important
applications are TV screens that can be adjusted to suit
changing viewing conditions and architectural glass that
can be optionally set for energy economy. The innovative
features of this materials research project provide its
name LANDSEC which stands for Large Area Neutral Density
Solid state Electrochromic Coating. Current state of the
art are small, blue colouring devices between glass
plates. Electrochromic projects in execution aim for
medium sized blue colouring devices. In LANDSEC materials
and technologies for large size. grey coloured all solid
state electrochromic coatings will be developed.
The consortium comprises a TV tube manufacturer (Philips)
and a manufacturer of glazings (SaintGobain) that both
are interested in producing LANDSEC systems for their
respective applications. These enterprises and a TV set
maker (Bang&Olufsen), who will be involved in developing
the driving electronics, may also act as end user of the
product. The needed special precursors will be
synthesized by a SME (Inorgtech). The fundamental
research of the intercalation processes and
electrochemical characterization will be carried out by
two universities (Technical University of Berlin and
University of Picardie Jules Verne, respectively).
Budgeted over 4 years at 5.4 MECU the project addresses a
market segment worth 3,500 MECU for TVs and another 3,500
MECU for architectural glazings at end prices in Europe
alone and offers significant prospects for the employees
of the industrial partners.
