The main innovative feature is the combination of a flexible and modular hardware and its integration into a CAE tool, which allows the automatic generation of real-time C, code for distributed controller hardware. This enables the user to systematically develop mechatronic systems. Both the CAE tool and the hardware allow organising not only the model structure of a mechatronic system in a hierarchical and modular manner but also the controller software. This approach enables the user to split up usually complex systems into smaller pieces, which can be tested more easily. Besides the structuring of model and controller algorithms, the controller algorithm determined during the computer-based development can automatically be downloaded to the target hardware. The software concept selected allows the implementation of HIL on that target hardware. The hardware is based on a novel hardware provided by Motorola. The developed hardware in combination with CAE tools can be utilised in industrial as well as in educational applications. In industry the end-users can be found in any company that designs complex mechatronic systems. In educational applications, departments are mainly going to be the end-users, which deal with control theory in the field of mechatronic systems.
Simulation is particularly adapted to a comprehensive study of stability on slopes of off roads mobile machinery. Stability is a very important criterion for safety and efficiency, but is usually evaluated only in static case, by calculation or measure. The dynamics of vehicle powertrain, suspension and eventual crane or tools have to be taken into account. The very high number of possible cases (combination of parameters affecting stability) makes it impossible to simulate them all with solid dynamics. A methodology was developed that combines both static and dynamics studies to evaluate the stability of mobile machines for a wide range of configurations and environment conditions with reasonable simulation time. One goal in this project was to determine an efficient computing method that would allow a supervision tool to estimate danger before accident occur, thanks to information from forwarder internal sensors. The methodology itself can be applied to a variety of off-road agricultural vehicles, to optimise design or to compare existing machines. In the particular case of CARETAKER prototype, simulation of driving requested simulation of coordinated digital control of numerous actuators as well as mechanics, which was achieved by simultaneous use of two interfaced simulation software commonly available to industry.
