Innovation of the Waste Water Treatment Processes and Plants Presently Operating in Tanning Industry

Cel

One of the most crucial problems in tanning industry is depuration of liquid wastes from leather production processes. At the present time the best results in terms of efficiency are achieved with large and complex depurators, generally handled by industrial associations, with heavy economic burdens (in Italy about 10,000 Lit/mc) and relevant environmental impact (creation of big dumps for getting rid of sludges). The aim of the project is to set up an innovative depuration process allowing a drastic reduction of chemicals consumption, minor plant and in-service costs, easier operation control, less quantity of final sludges (about 50%) and a higher organic content in sludges for a possible reclaiming of them. Practically, in the new depurative cycle the traditional chemical-physical treatment will be not utilized, allowing to eliminate chemicals consumption and to prevent also the organic matter from coprecipitating together with other pollutants and increasing final sludges volume. On the contrary organic matter will be utilized as valuable material in the biological degradation stage, after a preliminar removing of the sulphides from wastes by means of a catalytic treatment
