Cel An increasing number of small boats for passenger and workboat use are being built using 'flat-pack' methods where the individual hull sheets are designed using CAD and the output N/C data used to control the sheet cutting machines. With the drive to increase hull efficiency, ever more complex shapes are required and "buildability" of these is increasingly difficult. This project sets out to develop a system of interlocking structures which can be incorporated into sheet designs which will hold the sheets in place during fabrication operations. These will be user-friendly and will allow substantial savings in time and skill requirements. The project will combine both mechanical engineering and mathematics departments of a university and the outcome will significantly improve the competitiveness of small boat and eventually medium sized building in Europe.
